Starting July 2, T-Mobile customers can pay an extra $10 a month for “AtHome,” a new service that will allow customers to place unlimited domestic calls with their landline phones over their high-speed broadband connections.

It’s a new twist on Internet calling: T-Mobile plans to offer a supercheap version, essentially a loss leader to get and keep wireless customers. For $10 a month, T-Mobile customers will be able to make all the calls they want from traditional handsets at home across the Internet. The offer will be available in July.

If the quality is good enough to attract customers, the move is sure to put pressure on AT&T and Verizon Wireless, which already offer Internet phone service. Their service starts at around $30 a month, which is also what cable companies have been charging for their unlimited Internet calls. Even independent competitors like Vonage charge about $25 for comparable service.

T-Mobile at Home will include all the typical bells and whistles—unlimited domestic long distance, voice mail, three-way calling, call waiting, and caller ID. Customers can move their existing phone number to the new line.

The wireless carrier has tested the service in Dallas and Seattle. T-Mobile says that 97 percent of customers dropped their land lines in favor of the cheaper calling.

Unlike other dirt-cheap calling services, including Skype and magicJack, T-Mobile’s won’t require a PC to make calls. Customers would buy a T-Mobile router to plug into their broadband connection. The router will cost $50 with, in a nod to T-Mobile’s wireless pedigree, a two-year contract.

Virgin Mobile USA Offers Unlimited Wireless Plan Virgin Mobile USA made a move Tuesday to undercut other mobile providers offering unlimited rate plans. Mobile providers like T-Mobile and Sprint are currently offering customers an unlimited rate plan, with about $100 being the price customers can expect. Virgin Mobile USA cuts the price by $20 —

The new plan costs $79.99 for voice and $10 extra for text messages. There are no roaming fees and no credit card is required, as with Virgin’s other prepaid services, said CMO Bob Stohrer.

The Totally Unlimited plan, is billed by Virgin Mobile as the “lowest priced and first unlimited nationwide calling plan.” Users on the plan are not subject to roaming and are not necessarily tied to a two-year commitment.

Totally Unlimited gives users who purchase the plan the option to pay with credit or debit cards and not necessarily sign a long-term contract. Avoiding getting locked into a long-term contract may be an option that appeals to a large number of users fed up with their current mobile carrier and looking to make a switch.

The Totally Unlimited plan is another option mobile plan that Virgin Mobile is offering customers. The unlimited plan joins a Pay As You Go and Monthly model that Virgin debuted earlier in 2008.

The Totally Unlimited plan from Virgin Mobile comes several months after other nationwide carries rolled out unlimited use rate plans to their customers. Sprint’s Simply Everything plan costs customers $99.99. An one line, unlimited plan from Verizon Wireless also starts at $99, but runs all the way up to $139, depending on what type of unlimited service a customer wants. T-Mobile’s offering also comes in at $99.

Whether or not mobile customers will move to Virgin Mobile remains to be seen. But a less expensive price point and the option to change carrier at any time will likely attract a fair number of mobile subscribers.

Verizon Wireless announced an unlimited plan on Feb. 19 this year and was followed the next day by AT&T and T-Mobile. Sprint-Nextel announced its version nine days later.

Following media speculation, Verizon Wireless has announced that it has entered into an agreement to acquire Alltel Wireless in a cash merger. Under the terms of the agreement, Verizon Wireless will acquire the equity of Alltel for approximately $5.9 billion; based on Alltel’s projected net debt at closing of $22.2 billion, the aggregate value of the transaction is $28.1 billion.

“This move will create an enhanced platform of network coverage, spectrum and customer care to better serve the growing needs of both Alltel and Verizon Wireless customers for reliable basic and advanced broadband wireless services,” Lowell McAdam, Verizon Wireless president and CEO, said in a statement.

Alltel serves more than 13 million customers in markets in 34 states, including 57 primarily rural markets that Verizon Wireless does not serve. Together, the two carriers will boast more than 80 million customers, creating the largest wireless carrier in the country. AT&T, currently the top wireless carrier in the market by subscribers, has 71.4 million customers.

“This is a perfect fit, with Alltel’s high-value post-paid customer base, its solid financials, our common network technology, and significant, readily attainable synergies,” said Ivan Seidenberg, Verizon Communications CEO, in a statement. Verizon Communications owns a majority stake in Verizon Wireless, while Vodafone controls the remainder.

In the statement, Verizon said that Alltel President and CEO Scott Ford will continue on as head of Alltel until the merger is completed.

Alltel and Verizon hope to complete the merger by the end of the year. It’s subject to regulatory approvals, so the deal could hit a snag considering the market is already heavily consolidated.
